Tau Game Lodge Review

In June we set off on a safari to Tau Game Lodge. A 4 hour drive from Johannesburg on the border of Botswana, nestled inside the Madikwe Game Reserve.

It was Desi's first experience at a game lodge, and we were so lucky in our sightings. Four out of the Big 5 crossed our paths. We spotted tons of Ellies and Zebra on our drive in, raising the level excitement in an already excited little guy.

The lodge is 5 star with the most beautiful accommodation that looks out on the watering hole. Waking up in the morning with Ellies and Buffalo outside your window is extremely special, and truly an out this world experience.

The staff are so helpful and friendly, and they made us feel at home from the minute we arrived.

Declan, the ranger, made our drives extra special by really going out of his way to find some predators for us to see. His knowledge of the animals and bush, made the drives interesting and educational.

The spa is out of this world, and probably one of the best massages I have had.

From a kid-friendly perspective, I found the lodge extremely child friendly and accommodating. We were able to take Desi along on the game drives, and with the lodge being quiet, he rode his bicycle up and down all day.

There is a beautiful lookout deck situated at the bar with a swimming pool, perfect for the warmer months.

My only criticism is the food. Unfortunately it was not great on the first night, however, after chatting to the management and chef, they did improve for the 2nd evening.

It is however not quite what I expected from a 5* establishment. In my minds eye, I was hoping for a level of fine dining with different types of food. The food was nice, but nothing to rave about. Maybe my presumptions about what I should be getting, clouded my judgment and this is in fact standard for a game lodge. In saying that, I did still expect wow flavours, and it left me longing for more. It is however lockdown, and minimal staff, so I will take that into consideration, and definitely give them a second try.

All in all a fantastic experience and I give them a solid 4/5 rating. Visit their website www.taugamelodge.co.za for their specials and to book.
